Sequence of Events in Butoh

• Her reflection is normal and she checks her appearance
• She sees someone else in the mirror and there is no one else in the room 
• She's being pulled into the mirror
• The mirror is a doorway into another world
• She is in a baron place smokey and scary
• A demon attacks her and leaves her bleeding
• When she tries to escape the demon inhabits her and she becomes possesssed
• While possessed she attacks another deon and drink's it's blood
• She finds the mirror again and goes back to the real world 
• When in the real world her body stiffens up and turns to rock    

Butoh (Buto) - Sankai Juku

After my first performance I recieved a comment that I kept going into ballet perstions which is deffinatly not Butoh style. On the left side of the video the dancers do steps on their knees really low down. I used this walk in my performance when I was exploring my surrounding to show me hiding and being scared.

The Unborn

I couldn't find the right clip but theres a part where she opens her bathroom cabinet with a mirror door and the boy is there and he like jumps out at her. Her grandma then tells her about how mirrors are doorways and that she has to smash, burn and bury all of them. In the film it also explains about how twins are doorways and are copies of each other. There is also a part where an elderly man is possessed and crawls around and his head goes the wrong way. I used this in my performance by when I became possessed to have a very low centre and I also created a strange crawl to show to change from human to creature.

Matrix

Not sure if the upload worked but theres a moment in the matrix mirror when he almost cant get his hand back from the mirror. I included an element of this in my final butoh performance with my arm going into the mirror and from there it pulling me in. I showed this by slowly pushing my hand through the mirror then I pretended to pull my arm back out. I left my arm where it finished and I leaned backwards with the rest of my body to show me trying to pull free. After a certain point I then stumbled forward and tryed again and again until I fell through the miror and into this world. Also the idea of a normal mirror turning into this portal is illustrated quite well in this matrix clip.

Mirror Stimuli

For our assessment we were given the stimuli of mirrors to base our performance around. I decided to put my initial ideas in the form of a brainstorm:

After the general ideas I was much more interested in the mirror being some kind of portal to a strange world. I also think that you could show the change much more in your expression and body language.

Eating Disorders

I could show this through the technique of mime or Butoh as a solo performance. I could show someone first looking i the mirror then crying from their reflection. The person could then do actins to show her about to eat food then dropping it or by eating then trowing up to show them being bulimic. I would then show then exercising, running doing sit ups and getting really tired. This sequence I would repeat over and over getting more and more lethargic every time until they can't actually move.

Twins are reflections of each other

I would like to do this as a mutuality piece so that I can show the way that twins are connect to each other with point of contact. But also that in lifts you can show how twins help and support one another throughout there life. To show that they are twins they would mirror each other in identical perfect unison. But as the performance when on they would do increasingly different movements. To show that they are two different people and that thy have grown more independent.

The story of bloody Mary

The story that I know of is of a girl who had a very contagious disease and slipped into a coma at a time when people didn't know what they were. The farther quickly buried her despite the mothers refusal. This was at a time when people were buried with string connected around their wrist and connected to a bell above the grave. The mother swore that she heard the bell ringing every night but the farther was a practical man and believed this to be impossible. After a couple of nights he went to the grave to find that then bell had been pulled over. He quickly dug up the coffin a and inside was his now dead daughter with bloody hands and her nails stuck in the lid of the coffin.
Ideally I would show this as a butoh piece as it is quite a gruesome tail. At first she would be coughing and show basic symptoms of being ill. She would then faint and lie on the floor motionless. After awhile she will open her eyes and frantickly push against the sides of her coffin. As soon as she awakes I will play the sound effect of a bell ringing. She will continue to scratch and the top and scream her lungs out. The music and her screaming die down as she dies.

As you may be able to see I want to focus much more on the evil and gruesome aspects of mirrors. This is mainly because the technique I have chosen to perform is Butoh which from the information I know is supposed to be very grotesque. By producing brainstorms I can easily see all my initial ideas and way them up against each other.
